Today I walked over to the Japanese Folk Craft Museum in Meguro-ku. I saw beautiful centuries-old textiles that felt surprisingly modern, wonderful ceramics, and a truly extraordinary collection of paper-maiche and ceramic dolls. The museum was put together by one of my favorite Japanese designer's (Sori Yanagi) father, Yanagi Soetsu, who is widely credited with spearheading the Japanese folk crafts movement (even coining the term "mingei" or folk crafts).
