kitchen chalkboard

When I was living in my first apartment in Park Slope, Brooklyn, I took a thin sheet of wood and painted it with magnetic paint as well as chalkboard paint. Afterward, I framed it for use as a message board with my roommate. We'd write where the car was parked, a laundry list of to dos, as well as pin up the rent check, dry cleaning tickets, and well, the occasional parking citation. After I moved out of Brooklyn, I never knew what became of the board and I never ventured to make another one.

I began thinking about chalkboards again when I visited my friends R and N's house in Portland. R keeps the week's menu as well as a running shopping list on a neatly painted chalkboard square in her kitchen. They claim that it makes dinner planning much more organized and keeps everyone in the household on the same page.

Since we're only in a temporary space, I didn't want to use chalkboard paint our walls as I wasn't sure how to remove it. I shelved the idea until I came across this chalkboard wall decal, which works just as well as a traditional slate chalkboard, but adheres to the wall without damaging the surface paint. Simply unroll, peel, and carefully stick it onto a clean surface.

We're so happy with it that I had to share our find
