Today we visited Robert Sinskey Vineyards, for a cellar tour of the vineyard. Robert Sinskey's vineyards are organic and biodynamic--they grow all of the fruit on-site so that they are in control of the grapes at every stage of the process. They refuse to use pesticides and instead grow ground cover pants to provide the optimal environment for the vines. Instead of hauling out lawnmowers to tend to the wild grasses, they let their sheep do all of the work.
As I may have mentioned before, their wine is delicious--on our visit we tried the 08 Abraxas (a tart and playful white made of 4 grapes: Pinot Blanc, Riesling, Pinot Grigio, and Gewürtztraminer); the 05 Vandal Valley Pinot Noir, the 06 Carneros Pinot Noir, the 05 Vandal Vineyard Cabernet Franc, and an 05 Marcien.
More to come.
