I share M's enthusiasm for collecting pottery. M collects vintage Bauerware, Fiestaware, and any matte art pottery that she can find. I'm still working on my Heath collection of pottery and my Iittala bird collection.

J.A. Bauer Pottery Co. of Los Angeles (originally of Kentucky) manufactured bright happy retro pottery during the Depression and World War II years for California bungalow dwellers. They are prized by collectors and museums alike and are mostly found on the west coast, but you aren't advised to eat on them due to their high-lead content.

Homer Laughlin China Company of Lowell, West Virgina likewise produced an open-stock dinner ware in the late 1930s in a wide range of bright colors that employed modern sensibility and were affordable. Today, vintage fiesta ware can fetch a shiny penny--especially pieces which were glazed in the original 5 colors: orange-red, cobalt, light green, deep gold, and a yellow-cream.
